Uber den Künstler

Willem de Kooning (1904-1997.), was born in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) in 1904. When he was 12 he began an apprenticeship in commercial design and decorating. During this period he took night classes at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and Techniques. In 1926, de Kooning stowed away on a ship bound for the United States, where he jumped from various jobs in the Northeast until he eventually settled in New York City. While working as a commercial artist, he also began to develop his artistic style in the 1930s. He started to paint still lifes, figures and later on more abstract subjects which were inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. By the 1940s, figure painting and abstract subjects seemed to fuse perfectly, notably in Pink Angels. De Kooning became known for his depiction of women, varying from sensual to aggressive. In the 1950s de Kooning explored landscapes and even sculpture, before Alzheimer's disease made it impossible to continue on. He died in 1997 at age 92.
