Uber den Künstler

Johannes Lingelbach, sometimes written Lingelbach (Frankfurt am Main, 10 October 1622 - Amsterdam, 3 November 1674), was an important painter of genre and landscapes. After studying in Rome, he moved to Holland about 1625. He excelled in the treatment of markets, fairs and seaports.

Lingelbach’s work was influenced by Philips Wouwermans' landscapes and the chiaroscuro of the Italian painter Caravaggio. His colour is good, his touch lively and his works are noted for their variety. His blue lightly clouded skies produce an exciting effect. Among his works are “Roman Street Scene with Card Players” (the 1640s), The Blacksmith (1650), Dentist on Horseback (1651) and Battle Scene (1671).
