Uber den Künstler

Francisco de Goya was born on March 30, 1746, in Fuendetodos, Spain. He was the son of a guilder, and began his art studies at the young age at fourteen. He learned by copying masters as Velázquez and Rembrandt van Rijn. After this Goya moved to Madrid and Italy, where he had a chance of studying classic works.

Goya soon became a famous figure and he started to create works for the Royal family of Spain. Although the Spainish court was soon taken over by Ferdinand VII, he kept his position in the Spanish court. He was told: "You deserve to be garroted, but you are a great artist so we forgive you." Aside from his usual portraits, he created works that criticized both social and political problems of his era. Goya died on April 16, 1828, in Bordeaux, France.
